The Stanford Cardinal College Football Team in 2014

The Stanford Cardinal started their season with an easy 45-0 victory over UC Davis. Stanford's players would have to get ready for the season quickly because they faced the 14th ranked USC Trojans in their second game. Stanford and USC would have a defensive struggle the entire game before USC kicked a 53 yard field goal to win the game 13-10. Stanford would gain more than 100 yards more than USC on offense, but would be let down by two fumbles. After the disappointing loss, Stanford would easily defeat Army and Washington. Stanford would get their second tough game in the season when they faced 9th ranked Notre Dame on October 4th. It would be another defensive struggle for Stanford with a similar outcome. Notre Dame would heave a 23 yard touchdown pass on 4th down with one minute left in the game to win 17-14.

Stanford would follow up their second tough loss with an easy 34-17 victory over Washington State. The 23rd ranked Stanford Cardinal would face the 17th ranked Arizona State Sun Devils in their next game, but they struggle on their way to a 26-10 loss. After an easy victory over Oregon State, Stanford would be overmatched by the 5th ranked Oregon Ducks on their way to a 45-16 loss. Stanford would play one of the sloppiest games of the year when they faced Utah on November 15th. Each team only scored one touchdown in regulation before Utah ultimately won the game 20-17 in double overtime. Stanford would conclude the regular season with their two best games. After decisively beating California, Stanford would dismantle the 8th ranked UCLA Bruins 31-10. A 7-5 regular season record would earn Stanford a chance to play Maryland in the Foster Farms Bowl. Stanford would continue their small winning streak in the postseason with a 45-21 victory over Maryland.

Stanford Cardinal History

Stanford consistently ranks as the top academic institution that also carries an FBS Division I football program. However, Stanford also has a rich college football tradition, with an overall 605 - 440 - 49 winning record entering the 2014 college football season. Stanford has developed a rivalry with Notre Dame, even though they have only played the Fighting Irish 29 times. The victor of that game is awarded the Legends Trophy. Appropriately enough, that award for winning the Fighting Irish - Cardinal matchup is made up of a combination of California Redwood and Irish Crystal glass. Stanford's 2 National Championships came in 1926 and 1940. The coach behind those 2 winning teams? None other than the legendary Glenn "Pop" Warner, who still reigns as the winningest coach in Cardinal history. That 1940 National Championship team went unbeaten and untied after a 21 - 13 victory over Nebraska in the 1941 Rose Bowl. Stanford has consistently been a winning college program, finishing a minimum of 1 season in the Top 10 under 7 different coaches, and over 6 different decades.
