Stanford Manhandles Maryland in 2014 Foster Farms Bowl

Before a crowd of 34,780, the Stanford Cardinal had little trouble against the Maryland Terrapins, winning 45-21 at the Foster Farms bowl game played at Levi's Stadium in nearby Santa Clara on December 30, 2014. The win allowed Stanford to finish the 2014 campaign with an 8-5 mark, while Maryland dropped to 7-6 in their first year as a member of the Big Ten. The Cardinal put together a balanced ball-control offense that had the ball in their possession for just over 37 minutes while virtually doubling the Terrapins' offensive output. Their performance put big smiles on those fans who enjoyed betting on the Stanford Cardinal football team.

Meanwhile the Stanford defense limited their opponents to a just 0.6 yards per carry on the ground and sacked Maryland six times. The Cardinal was led by Defensive Player of the Game James Vaughters at linebacker, who had two sacks among his five tackles and also forced a fumble. Stanford wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, driving 75 yards in 12 plays before running back Remound Wright crashed over the goal line on a one-yard run. They controlled game play in such a way that fans of California football will be proud.

Maryland matched that with a one-yard run of their own from running back Wes Brown early in the second quarter. However the Cardinal blew the game open with three unanswered touchdowns before halftime. The first score came on a drive that started at the Maryland 49-yard-line. Another scoring run by Wright gave Stanford the lead for good, with the key play coming on the series' opening call: a 28-yard pass play from the game's offensive MVP, quarterback Kevin Hogan, to tight end Greg Taboada.

After then holding the Terrapins, the Cardinal moved down 70 yards on just five plays to quickly make it 21-7. Wright scored once again, but it was a 30-yard bootleg by Hogan and a 37–yard pass to another tight end, Austin Hooper, that set it up. Another defensive stop and strong punt return gave Stanford prime field position near midfield. That drive, which included a fourth down conversion, culminated with Hogan connecting with wideout Devon Cajuste to make it 28-7 at intermission.

Stanford showed no signs of letting up at this point, taking advantage of a pickoff in Maryland territory. Just two plays after the interception, another Hogan to Cajuste connection boosted the Cardinal advantage to 35-7. Comfortably ahead at this point, Stanford applied the coup de grace with a nine-play, 66-yard drive that concluded when running back Ricky Seale scored on a one-yard run.

The Terrapins would score a pair of touchdowns, one coming on the 100-yard kickoff return that followed Seale's score, while the Cardinal added a final field goal. Maryland's inability to stop opposing offenses was on display again with this performance. In the team's six losses, they allowed 267 points, an average of 44.5 points per game. The Cardinal ended the year on a high note, after easily dispatching fellow PAC-12 rivals California and UCLA to close out the regular season. Meanwhile, the Terrapins dropped three of their last four contests and four of their final six.
