The Oakland Raiders – A Team Beloved By Their Fans

Not as old as the San Francisco 49ers, the Oakland Raiders were established the same year as their rivals the San Diego Chargers, in 1960. After 10 years as a member of the AFL, the Raiders became a part of the NFL following the AFL – NFL merger. The Raiders are considered to be a very successful team, winning 54% of their games played over the lifespan of the team. Their lifetime record includes 15 division titles, 3 Super Bowl Championship wins, and 4 AFC titles. They also boast 13 former team members enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. While they may not have as many Super Bowl wins as their rivals the 49ers, they are able to maintain a massive fan base. They have been unable to reach the playoffs for 10 season, and finished the 2013 season with a record of 4 – 12.

The Rise of Raider Nation as National Brand

The fans of the Oakland Raiders are known as Raider Nation. The name was originated by Jim Hudson when the team returned to LA in the early 80's. The fan group became so well known and popular that the NFL secured the rights to the Raider Nation name and associated logos. The fans are so devoted that a book was written about it, entitled "Better to Reign in Hell". The group developed a bad boy image which coincided with the team's aggressive playing style in the 70's and 80's, which is the period in which they won three Super Bowl titles.

The team had several nicknames during this time, such as America's Most Wanted and The Men in Black. The Raiders eventually became associated with rap groups on the West Coast, such as N.W.A. This association drove the Raider Nation to spread throughout the country and enhancing the team's popularity as a brand. Unfortunately it also led to the fans earning an undeserved reputation for violence and gangster activity, a reputation which still exists to this day. The Raider's distinctive team culture includes fans dressing up in elaborate costumes that often include alter ego characters designed to intimidate their rivals on game day.

The Present Era of the Oakland Raiders

2012 brought the Raiders a new general manager, Reggie McKenzie, as well as a new head coach, Dennis Allen. This would be the 7th head coach within 10 seasons. More changes came in the 2013 offseason, including major roster moves. Acquisitions included Kevin Burnett, Nick Roach and Kaluka Maiava, Pat Sims, Vance Walker, Tracy Porter, Mike Jenkins, Jason Hunter and Usama Young. Releases included Darrius Heyward-Bey, Michael Huff, Rolando McClain and Tommy Kelly, Matt Flynn and Charles Woodson. Their final record for 2013 was 4 – 12. Its anyone's guess how strong they will come on in 2014.
